How to declutter a bathroom

The short answer

The bathroom is the fastest win in the house: forty-five minutes, done before dinner. Start with medicines, bagging anything expired for the pharmacy, never the bin or the toilet. Then products you did not like, checking the open-jar symbol. Then thin or fraying towels, which animal shelters often want. Finish under the sink, the graveyard of half-used bottles.

What order should I declutter the bathroom in?

  1. Medicines firstAnything expired, and anything for a condition you no longer have. Bag it for the pharmacy — never the bin, never the toilet.
  2. Products you didn't likeCheck the small open-jar symbol on the label. 12M or 6M is how long it lasts after opening, not how long it can sit unopened.
  3. Old towels and bath matsThin, grey or fraying. Animal shelters often want them — ring first, some are overwhelmed with donations.
  4. Under the sink, lastThe graveyard. Half-used cleaning products, ancient sunscreen, a hairdryer that stopped working two years ago.

What will I find, and where does it go?

Every bathroom declutter turns these up. Each has its own page, written for Australian Capital Territory where the answer changes by state.
