Container deposit in TAS: what you can return
In Tasmania, Recycle Rewards has paid a 10 cent refund on eligible drink containers since 1 May 2025. Most 150 millilitre to 3 litre glass, plastic, aluminium, steel and carton containers qualify. Glass wine and spirit bottles, plain milk and cordial bottles do not. Do not crush them: the barcode has to be scannable.

What do I do with drink containers in TAS?
- Check the mark Eligible containers carry the scheme's refund mark. If it is missing, check the scheme's eligibility list or app before you bin it.
- Empty it Every scheme wants the container empty. Lids, crushing and sorting rules differ by scheme, so read the state rules below before you bag them up.
- Bag them by type Most depots pay faster if aluminium, glass and plastic are separated.
Recycle Rewards has run in TAS since 1 May 2025, paying 10c a container. Most drink containers from 150ml to 3L in glass, plastic, aluminium, steel or liquid paperboard are eligible. Plain milk containers, glass wine bottles, glass spirit bottles, cordial bottles, flavoured milk and juice of 1L or more, and plastic containers under 150ml are excluded. The refund point network is still rolling out. Do not crush containers, because a returned container needs a readable barcode. Leave lids on, which are recyclable too, and leave labels on so the container can be recognised as eligible.

Which containers can I return in Tasmania?
Most drink containers from 150 millilitres to 3 litres made from glass, plastic, aluminium, steel or liquid paperboard are eligible for the 10 cent Recycle Rewards refund. Tasmania excludes plain milk containers, flavoured milk of 1 litre or more, glass wine bottles, glass spirit bottles, cordial bottles, juice containers of 1 litre or more, and plastic containers under 150 millilitres. Cartons must be under 1 litre.
Do I need to take the lids off in Tasmania?
No. Recycle Rewards asks that lids are left on, and the lids are recyclable too. Leave the labels on as well, so the container can be recognised as eligible. Do not crush your containers: a container returned to a Tasmanian refund point needs a readable barcode, so keep it whole and empty.
Where is my nearest Recycle Rewards refund point?
Use the scheme's where to return locator before you travel. The Tasmanian network is still being built out: the operator says more refund points are being added each week during the rollout, and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania described a phased rollout of 49 refund points across the state, including on King and Flinders Islands.
Why won't the machine take my wine bottle?
Glass wine bottles, glass spirit bottles and cordial bottles are named exclusions from Tasmania's Recycle Rewards scheme, along with plain milk containers, flavoured milk of 1 litre or more and juice containers of 1 litre or more. They earn no refund at a Tasmanian refund point. They are still recyclable, so put them in the kerbside recycling bin, loose and never bagged.
