Declutter · Where to start
Stuck? Start here
Start with the time you have, not the time you wish you had. Fifteen minutes: clear the kitchen bench. An hour: one drawer, then the one beside it. A weekend: the wardrobe in one pass. No energy at all: fill one bag with unarguable rubbish. Motivation turns up after something visibly changes, not before.
Almost nobody stalls because the job is hard. They stall because the job has no edges. Give it one.
I have 15 minutes. What do I do?
The kitchen bench. Clear it completely, wipe it, and put back only what earns its place. It's the surface you see most, so the win keeps paying you all week. Anything without a home goes in a box — deal with the box later, not now.
I have an hour. What do I do?
One drawer, then the one beside it. Not the whole kitchen. Empty the drawer onto a towel, bin the obvious rubbish, and put back what you've used this year. The rest goes in the op shop bag. Stop when the hour is up, even if you're mid-drawer.
I have a weekend. What do I do?
The wardrobe, in one pass. Everything out onto the bed — the mess forces you to finish. Three piles: keep, op shop, textile recovery. If the bed has to be clear by bedtime, you'll make faster decisions.
I have no energy at all. What do I do?
One bag, anything at all. Walk through the house with a bin bag and fill it with things that are unambiguously rubbish — dead pens, broken chargers, expired food, packaging. No decisions required. It's the cheapest possible win, and it usually starts something.
Fifteen minutes is a spot, not a room. Fourteen fifteen-minute challenges, each with a finish line.
Which room first?
The kitchen. It's the highest-yield room in the house and the momentum carries you into harder ones.
