Skip bin hire in Canberra: before you book
In Canberra, check your bulky waste collection first: one booked collection each financial year is free and takes most of what a small skip would. If you still need a skip, a smaller one loaded yourself over a weekend is cheaper than most people expect. Mattresses, paint and e-waste are usually excluded.

Should I book the free collection instead of a skip in Canberra?
If it fits in a booked bulky waste collection and you can wait, yes. Every Canberra household gets one free collection each financial year, booked in advance. If this year's booking is already used, or the pile is bigger than the collection takes, a skip is the next step.
What can't go in a skip bin?
It varies by operator, but mattresses, tyres, paint, chemicals, gas bottles and asbestos are commonly excluded or surcharged. In the ACT most of those have a free route anyway: paint, chemicals, gas bottles and batteries go free to the hazardous waste area at Mugga Lane or Mitchell, in household quantities and within the published per-visit limits. Ask the operator before you load.
What size skip do I need in Canberra?
Smaller than you think, if you sort first. Refundable drink containers, e-waste, metal, garden waste and anything with reuse value all have their own route in the ACT, and pulling them out of the pile often drops you a skip size. Skips are quoted in cubic metres, and a standard box trailer holds roughly one.
Is a skip cheaper than a paid removal in Canberra?
Usually, if you do the loading. A removal charges for labour and a truck. A skip charges for the bin and the disposal and you supply the work. For a small pile, or if you cannot lift things, a single pickup can come out cheaper. Either way, ask whether the disposal fee is inside the quote.
