What size skip do I need?
Smaller than you think, if you sort first. In South Australia e-waste has its own drop-off route, eligible containers earn 10 cents each at a depot, chemicals and paint go free to a Green Industries SA depot, and garden waste goes in the green organics bin or to a transfer station. Pulling all of that out of the pile often drops you a skip size.
What can't go in a skip bin in SA?
It varies by operator, but mattresses, tyres, paint, chemicals, gas bottles, asbestos and e-waste are commonly excluded or surcharged. Several of those cannot legally go to South Australian landfill anyway: e-waste since September 2013, along with whole tyres, liquid wastes and most hazardous wastes. Ask the operator what its skip accepts before it is delivered.
Do I need a permit for a skip on the verge?
Permits for a skip placed on the road or the verge are a council matter in South Australia. The rules and any fee are set by your council, so check before the skip arrives, and ask the operator too, since it usually knows the requirements for the councils it services. On your own driveway it is not a council question.
Is a skip cheaper than a paid removal?
Usually, if you do the loading. A skip charges for the bin and the disposal and you supply the labour, while a removal charges for a truck and two people as well. If the pile is small, or you cannot lift, a single pickup can work out cheaper. Check the hard waste option first either way, because it may take the bulk of it.
