Mattress disposal in Sydney
In New South Wales, a mattress or a sofa cannot go in a kerbside bin. Most councils run a bulky household clean-up, either booked or scheduled, and the EPA's 2024-25 survey counted 75 councils offering one. Sound furniture is worth giving away first. For a mattress, a council clean-up or a commercial recycler is the route.

What do I do with furniture & mattresses in NSW?
- Sound and clean? Sell or give it away first. Marketplace, Buy Nothing groups, or a charity that collects larger items.
- Mattresses need a recycler Not kerbside. A recycler strips the steel, foam and timber, usually for a small fee. Keep it dry — wet mattresses get rejected.
- Genuinely finished? Council bulk collection, within the collection window only.

Does my NSW council collect bulky waste?
Most do, but not all. The NSW EPA's 2024-25 survey found 75 councils offering some form of bulky kerbside pickup, and 110 councils providing drop-off at a waste facility, 27 of those with free disposal vouchers. Whether the service is booked or scheduled, and how many collections a household gets, is set by each council, so check your council's site.
Where can I get rid of a mattress in NSW?
There is no state-wide mattress scheme in New South Wales, so it is a council or a commercial matter. Book your council's bulky household clean-up, take it to a waste facility if your council runs one, or pay a mattress recycler that strips out the steel, foam and timber. Keep it dry, because a wet mattress gets rejected.
Will a charity collect furniture in NSW?
Sometimes, if it is clean, sound and resellable. Vinnies NSW runs the largest network and takes a furniture donation collection request, though it says a further assessment is required and items are subject to the driver's discretion. Vinnies NSW will not take children's furniture such as cots, bassinets, highchairs, prams or car seats, or oversized furniture. Salvos Stores books free collections through its own site.
Can I put furniture out on the kerb in NSW?
Only for a clean-up your council has booked or scheduled for your address. Councils set their own rules on what goes out, how much, and when it can appear on the kerb. Putting furniture out early or outside a collection is illegal dumping, and it is traceable to the house. Check the dates with your council before anything leaves the garage.
