- Mattresses need a recycler Not kerbside. A recycler strips the steel, foam and timber, usually for a small fee. Keep it dry — wet mattresses get rejected.
- Genuinely finished? Council bulk collection, within the collection window only.

In the NT, Vinnies runs ten stores and a warehouse across Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, and Salvos Stores has a store at Winnellie. Ring before you drive: opening hours and what they accept change, and a closed door is how donations become dumping. Salvos and Vinnies both list stores by suburb.
Can I put a mattress in the bin in the NT?
No. A mattress does not fit in a kerbside bin and cannot go in one. The Northern Territory publishes no Territory-wide mattress recycling scheme or ban, so disposal is handled at council waste facilities: ring your council or transfer station and ask what it takes. Leaving a mattress on the kerb outside any collection your council runs is illegal dumping, and it is traceable to the house.
Is there a hard waste or verge collection in the Northern Territory?
No Territory-wide hard waste or verge program is published by the NT Government or the NT EPA. Will a charity take used furniture in the NT?

Salvos Stores has a Northern Territory store at Winnellie and advertises a free home collection, booked on its site, typically three to four weeks ahead.
Where can I recycle a mattress in Darwin?
There is no published Northern Territory mattress recycling program, so the answer comes from your council or your nearest transfer station: ring and ask whether they take mattresses and what they charge per item. Keep it dry in the meantime. A mattress that has been rained on is usually rejected for recycling and goes to landfill instead, whoever ends up taking it.
